China Surface Warships

Additional Information

Recently it was announced that China’s PLA Navy now has more ships (300) than the U.S. Navy

(287). This book covers the bulk of Beijing’s Navy including destroyers, frigates, and corvettes.

These categories have seen more growth since 2005 than any other. The rapid growth of ships in these categories is in keeping with the Military Strategy China released in 2015 which states,

“… the PLA Navy (PLAN) will gradually shift its focus from “offshore waters defense” to the

combination of “offshore waters defense” with “open seas protection,” and build a combined,

multi-functional and efficient marine combat force structure.” The launching of new ships is in

addition to retiring very old ships (pre-1990) and modernizing ships built after that.

This focus makes sense when you consider the strategy of creating defensive “rings” in the seas

around China. It’s kinda like the bar fight scene in the movie “A Bronx Tale” when the boss

locks the front door and says, “Now you’se can’t get out.” I suspect the plan will all come

together by the year 2025. Wait any longer than that and this new batch of ships will be out of

date.

U.S. Navy ships are larger, and the U.S. has more aircraft carriers – China has one active, one

being fitted out and 2 (or 3) being built. We added information on China’s aircraft carriers,

however there is very little out there. We will update this as we find out more.

We decided to publish this as a separate book since the submarine force is large and growing in significance.   We tried to confirm the information from several sources, but there is a lot of disinformation out there so if you run across any anomalies, please let us know and we will make the necessary corrections.

Russia Surface Warships

Additional Information

This book contains the majority of the active surface warships in the Russian Navy.

The information in this book is merely a snapshot in time. Warships are complex instruments

that require a great deal of maintenance. Warships are also constantly being upgraded. New

weapons and electronics are installed on a regular basis. We will reprint this book next year as

new information comes available. If you find something that needs to be corrected or updated,

please let us know at USGOVPUB.COM.

We tried to confirm the information from several sources, but there is a lot of disinformation out there so if you run across any anomalies, please let us know and we will make the necessary corrections.

Iran Combat Submarines

Additional Information

Iran may not have many large submarines but they have lots of small ones, including semi-submersibles and "wet" submarines used to deliver swimmers for recon missions and minelaying.  Unfortunately (for them) the Arabian Sea limits the area of operations for their larger subs to roughly one-third the area due to the shallow depth.  There is some scuttlebutt that Iran is building a larger submarine though we have been unable to confirm this.

Taiwan Surface Warships book 2019 - 2020

Taiwan Surface Warships

Additional Information

Recently it was announced that China’s PLA Navy now has more ships (300) than the U.S. Navy

(287). This book covers the bulk of Taiwan’s Navy including destroyers, frigates, and corvettes.

Taiwan is in the midst of upgrading their defense posture with indigenous boats designed to ward off an attack. Their new corvette is fast and the high-speed minelayers coming on line in

November 2021 will go a long way towards denying naval dominance by an enemy around the

island nation.

The corvette has been dubbed an “aircraft carrier killer” by the press and that tells me Taiwan is

concerned with China’s plans to launch several new aircraft carriers in the coming years. The

next generation of aircraft carriers (after the ships that are currently undergoing sea trials) will

probably be nuclear powered. I suspect they will also include a full complement of defensive

weapons to include lasers, rail guns and as yet unannounced sonic weapons similar to what was

used in Cuba, but on a much larger scale. It remains to be seen if China’s strategy of moving the

conflict further away from their shores will be effective. It also remains to be seen how China

will deal with a fully-capable adversary in their rear, if conflict breaks out on the new islands

being built.

I suspect we will see this all play out before the year 2030.

North Korea Surface Warships book 2019 - 2020

North Korea Surface Warships

Additional Information

We thought we would assemble a list of active combatant ships in the North Korean Navy. We tried to include a photo of each as well as the general performance and weapons. Some of the information is not available, and some of the photographs are not in the public domain, so we did the best we could. We decided to print the book in color so some of the details readily stand out. It’s pretty obvious that the North Korean Navy has given up trying to launch anti-submarine helicopters from ships and are focusing on smaller, stealthier boats.

This book is dedicated to the memory of the 46 South Korean sailors of the ROKS Cheonan that sank off the country's west coast near Baengnyeong Island on 26 March 2010.

North Korea Combat Submarines book

North Korea Combat Submarines

Additional Information

North Korea is estimated to have up to 70 active submarines of various sizes. There have been numerous reports in the press that North Korea is currently building a larger ballistic missile submarine capable of launching 3 ballistic missiles. Analysts believe the North Koreans are refitting a Project 633 class Soviet diesel electric submarine, “Romeo” class hull by stretching the hull to accommodate the three missiles. Very little is known about the submarine, however we assume it will not include nuclear-power propulsion.

Although the specs are closely held secrets, there were some clues. Anyway, this is what we think they will look like when they are finally built. The information contained in the book is believed to be factual, however there is a lot of disinformation on this subject in open source material, so we used our best judgement based on the available information.
